VA Secretary Robert McDonald stands by his employees

Despite the aggressive influence from Capitol Hill to hold VA employees’ accountable, McDonald feels that the few who will be reprimanded do not represent the majority. “We can’t fire our way to excellence. Over my 33 years in the private sector, I’ve never encountered an organization where firing people was a measure of leadership.” He goes on to state that the VA has fired 3,750 employees over the two years he has led the department. This number equates to about 1% of the agency’s workforce.  These may not be the exact answers we are looking for especially when we take a look at previous reports of documents that have gone missing and supervisors who forcibly push employees to relocate to keep their tenure pay but acquire a less stressful position.
