Lesser Known Benefits for Veterans
VA disability is an important benefit for veterans who are limited by injuries sustained during military service or service-connected illness. But monthly disability compensation is just one of many benefits that may be available to you as a veteran. Here are some benefits you may not be aware of.
Types of Veterans Benefits
Medical Benefits
If you receive VA disability benefits, you are generally also entitled to healthcare services. Depending on your disability rating, those services may be limited to care for your service-connected condition or may be broader. However, there are other ways to qualify for VA healthcare services.
If you served at least 24 months or your full term of active duty, you may be able to get VA health services, especially if you meet certain criteria like having been a POW, demonstrating financial need, or having served in certain locations during certain time periods. In some circumstances, you may qualify even if you don’t meet the minimum service requirements.
Other health-related benefits may also be available, such as:
- VA Dental Insurance Program (VADIP): If you are enrolled in VA health services you may also qualify for discounted dental insurance coverage.
- Long-Term Care Assistance: If you are signed up for VA health services you may qualify for long-term care services, including nursing care, physical therapy, help with daily activities, and caregiver support.
Financial Benefits
The VA also offers a variety of benefits designed to assist veterans with their finances, including:
- VA-Backed Home Loans: Veterans who meet minimum service requirements or fall under an exception to those requirements can qualify for VA-backed home loans. There is also a special program for Native American veterans.
- Life Insurance: There are a variety of different life insurance programs available to veterans and their families. Eligibility requirements vary by program.
- Burial Benefits: VA burial benefits may include a burial plot in a national cemetery, a headstone or marker, and a burial allowance.
Business and Employment Benefits
Benefits and services to assist veterans with their post-military careers include:
- Government Hiring Preference: Veterans receive additional points when applying for many federal jobs, which can offer a significant advantage. Some states also offer a preference for veteran applicants.
- Business Loans and Grants: The Small Business Administration offers training, funding, and other services specifically tailored to veterans.
