Qualifying for VA Disability Benefits
To be approved for VA disability compensation in Missouri, you must establish three essential criteria: a currently diagnosed medical condition, proof that an incident, injury, or illness occurred during your active military duty, and a medical connection (called a “nexus”) linking your current condition to your service.
Unlike Social Security Disability programs, the VA doesn’t require complete disability, veterans can receive compensation for partially disabling conditions rated on a scale from 0 to 100%, which determines their monthly payment amount.
You’ll need evidence showing what happened during your military service, such as service records documenting exposure to hazards, medical treatment records from active duty, documentation of your military role, or statements from fellow servicemembers.
Finally, a qualified medical provider must supply a nexus opinion stating your condition is “at least as likely as not” connected to your military service.
