Qualifying for VA Disability Benefits in Montana
To receive VA disability compensation in Montana, you need to prove three key elements: you must have a diagnosis for a current medical condition, you must demonstrate that an injury, illness, or incident happened while you were serving on active duty, and you must provide medical evidence establishing a link (known as a “nexus”) between your diagnosis and your military service.
The VA system allows veterans to collect benefits for conditions that partially limit their abilities. You don’t have to be totally disabled like some other disability programs require. Your disability is assigned a percentage rating between 0 and 100%, and this rating determines your monthly benefit payment.
Supporting your claim requires documentation from your service period, including records that show you encountered dangerous conditions or hazardous materials, any medical care you received while on active duty, information about your assigned duties and responsibilities, or sworn statements from you and those who served with you.
A medical professional must then provide an expert opinion confirming that your current condition is “at least as likely as not” related to your military service. This critical link is what the VA calls a nexus.
