They created new regulations a few short years ago to address the increasing frequency of claims for the condition, but they made it so complex that their own raters don’t know how to rate the cases. Additionally, the VA’s own medical examiners frequently fail to perform adequate examinations resulting in wrongly denied claims or low ratings.

What Is a TBI?

A traumatic brain injury is classified as an intracranial injury. This means that an external force causes damage specifically to the brain, as opposed to the scalp or skull. Such an injury could be caused by a blast wave from a bomb or grenade or another type of impact, such as a fall. It is well known that this type of injury does not receive much attention or concern. However, over the last ten years, more than 133,000 soldiers were given this diagnosis.

Now that the military is beginning to realize how serious of a problem this is, it is stepping up and taking charge in this science. The Army has dedicated $633 million and 472 research projects to the study of traumatic brain injuries. These injuries do not have to be caused by combat-they often occur in training injuries, vehicle accidents, and other non-fighting activities.

Problems with Diagnosing TBIs

Traumatic brain injuries can range from mild to severe. The problem lies with recognizing and diagnosing mild injuries. Severe TBI’s are normally very easy to spot. If you believe you may have received this kind of damage during your time in military service, the best way to tell is to look at the symptoms. Some of the common signs include:

• Headaches
• Memory problems
• Seizures
• Fatigue
• Hypersensitivity to light and sound
• Vomiting
• Nausea
• Difficulty balancing
• Concentration problems
• Significant change in sleeping patterns
• Behavioral changes
• Anxiety disorders
