An investigative report on veterans benefits from California shows that vets wait longer for claim decisions if they live in high population states. Regional offices in New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles were among the slowest to process claims. Somewhat surprisingly, the report shows that the Indianapolis regional office was the third slowest in the country, with an average wait time of more than 350 days.
Although disturbing, it is not surprising that states with the largest populations (and presumably larger populations of veterans) take longer to process veterans’ claims. VA has acknowledged the problem by hiring more claims adjudicators, a point this report brings out. However, the delays do appear to be getting worse, despite VA’s hiring efforts. One would, of course, hope that VA is focusing its hiring efforts on regional offices with the longest wait times. Another solution might be for the regional offices that do not have a significant backlog to assist those with high backlogs, and this does appear to be taking place, at least to some extent.
Can You Do Anything About the Delay in VA Benefits Decisions?
Where ever you are located, it is almost a certainty that you will be face delays after you file your claim or appeal. And, although delay is inevitable, you are only helping yourself in the process if you are able to present your case in a manner that is clear, concise, and easy for an adjudicator to understand. This is where hiring a veterans benefits advocate is invaluable.
