COVID-19: Potential Extensions for Veterans Applying for Benefits During Pandemic

Senate Veterans Affairs Chairman Sen. Jerry Moran, R-Kansas, and ranking member Sen. Jon Tester, D-Mont., said they are asking the Department of Veterans Affairs to waive or extend claim deadline during the COVID-19 crisis.

Many of the stay-at-home orders or self-isolation instructions which have been issued in many states could potentially put veterans in the position of having to risk themselves or risk violating these order to file necessary paperwork for their claims or appeals. Veterans also may not be able to access the Veteran Service Organizations, legal clinics, or advocate offices that may be helping them navigate the benefits and claims processes.

In light of this, Senators are encouraging the VA to institute a waiver for all veterans who are facing filing deadlines and consider establishing a retroactive date for all new claim submissions. To read the Senators’ letter to VA Secretary Robert Wilkie, click here.
