The 100,000 Jobs Mission was founded by eleven companies in 2011 and set a goal of hiring 100,000 veterans by 2020. As of now there 154 companies associated with the project. According to Shannon O-Reilly, a spokeswoman for JPMorgan Chase, those companies have hired 140,832 vets through the first quarter of 2014. The results have been so staggering that the overall goal has been increased to 200,000 total jobs for veterans.
Employers, or even people in general, may wrongly assume that veterans have visually undetectable illnesses such as a traumatic brain injury or post trauma stress. The coalition was created so there would be companies out there that would work with the veterans instead of rejecting them based on misconceptions of their condition. The CEO of One Mind for Research, General Peter Chiarelli, said:
Of the small percentage that have been affected and seek treatment, there is no reason they cannot perform in the workplace.
Some of the more well-known companies that are involved with the initiative include Amazon.com, AT&T, Macy’s, United Airlines and Verizon. Building on the success of the original program, the Military Spouse Talent Exchange is starting as a way for those companies to share information about military spouses in order to help them secure jobs.
More Information: Veterans Unable to Work
Of course some veterans are in fact disabled as a result of their service. Some have faced an uphill battle, unable to find good jobs they are able to perform in order to support themselves or their families, but also either denied VA benefits or uncertain whether they would qualify for benefits. We encourage such former military members to learn more about their potential eligibility or contact our team for assistance.
