An investigation by the General Accounting Office (GAO) revealed that the VA has no consistent policy to evaluate and measure the performance of its mail operations. It also does not provide managers with standards or authority to manage the mail operations. This should alarm all veterans who send mail to the VA as the VA may not be getting your mail. If the VA has no consistent mechanism for tracking this information then it cannot guarantee that the information has been received. This may result in the VA claiming that it didn’t receive mail the veteran has sent the VA including such things as VA disability claim forms, medical records, statements, etc. One of the most frightening results will be that the VA may assert that veterans miss appeal deadlines.
