President Elect Announces His Nominee for Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs

President Elect Donald Trump announced at a press conference today that he plans to announce David Shulkin as his nominee for Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs.

Mr. Shulkin is currently the Undersecretary for Health at the VA.  It is clear from this announcement that the President Elect has had difficulty finding someone to take the position.  A number of potential nominees have withdrawn from consideration over the past few weeks. Even more problematic is that if Mr. Shulkin is approved he would become the first non-veterans VA secretary in history.  This is not sitting well with veterans and veterans groups.  This selection is also a clear signal from the President Elect that his administration will focus on veterans health care issues at the expense of the benefits such as VA disability claims and appeals.  For the many reasons above, we at Veterans Help Group do not support this nomination and encourage veterans contact their respective members of Congress to oppose this nomination as well.
