What Happens to My VA Benefits if the Government Shuts Down?

Government shutdowns used to be a rare event that politicians on both sides of the aisle worked diligently to avoid, but that’s changed in recent years. In 2018, the government shut down twice, the first time for 23 days and the second for 34.

Since then, there have been several near misses. That’s always a scary time for people who are dependent on the federal government for monetary benefits and for services. Here’s what you need to know about VA disability benefits and government shutdowns.

What Really Happens During a Government Shutdown?

Budget related shutdowns aren’t actually full shutdowns of the federal government. “Essential” workers stay on the job, meaning many VA services will continue. These include:

  • Processing of VA disability claims
  • Payment of monthly VA disability benefits
  • Healthcare services
  • Board appeals
  • Burials
  • Contact centers and crisis line

However, some services will be suspended if there is a shutdown. These include:

  • Career counseling
  • Transition services
  • GI Bill hotline
  • Public affairs and outreach
  • Grounds maintenance at VA national cemeteries
  • Placement of permanent headstones at VA national cemeteries
  • Processing of applications for pre-need burials
  • Printing of presidential memorial certificates

All Regional Offices will also be closed during a shutdown.

Will a Shutdown Delay Services?

It’s unclear how a government shutdown will impact the timeline for services that remain operational during a government shutdown. That’s because VA staffing during a shutdown will depend on the number of employees who are considered essential. During the 2018 shutdowns most VA staff continued to work, but it is not certain whether that would be the case this round.

You Can Move Forward with Your VA Disability Claim During a Shutdown

If you are preparing to file a VA disability claim or want to appeal a denial of VA disability benefits, you shouldn’t let the possibility of a shutdown–or even an actual shutdown–deter you. Claims processing continues during a shutdown, and the date you file your claim can impact your benefits.

The advocates at Veterans Help Group are dedicated to helping veterans and their families get the benefits they deserve. We’re here for you, shutdown or not. To learn more, call us today at 855-855-8992 or contact us here.
