What VA Disability Rating Can I Receive for Knee Pain or Knee Injuries?
Military service can be hard on your knees for many reasons, from lifting and carrying to extended hours on your feet to being in unnatural positions. If you have a service-connected problem that caused knee injuries, you may be able to get a VA disability rating and collect VA disability benefits.
Your disability rating for knee pain and other knee-related issues will depend on both the condition and the severity of symptoms and limitations. Here are some examples of the most common types of service-connected knee injuries or conditions and how they are rated.
VA Disability Ratings for Knee Injuries and Conditions
Knee injuries/conditions are treated differently depending on the associated limitations/loss of function and on whether they are isolated or part of a larger problem. For example, arthritis in the knee may be rated under the schedule for multi-joint arthritis, if at least one other joint is affected. Multi-joint arthritis may be rated at 20%, 40%, 60% or 100%, depending on severity and specific criteria.
On the other hand, many conditions of the knee are rated independently. Some examples include:
- Ankylosis of the knee, which may be rated at 30%, 40%, 50% or 60% depending on the degree of flexion of the joint
- Recurrent subluxation or instability of the knee, which may be rated at 10%, 20% or 30% depending on the cause and the type of supportive devices prescribed by your medical provider
- Patellar instability, which may be rated at 10%, 20% or 30%
As you can see, the possible VA disability ratings for knee problems vary significantly. There are also other factors to be considered in pursuing a VA disability claim for knee pain. For example:
- Whether your knee problems may be secondary to a service-connected condition (whether already established or not) such as a back injury
- Whether your knee problems may be a symptom of a condition that has other symptoms as well and may qualify you for a higher disability rating
- Whether you have other service-connected conditions, whether related or not, that could combine for a higher disability rating
