On Saturday, May 10, 2014, Veterans Help Group sponsored the 2014 Run for Freedom 10k, 5k, and 2 mile walk at Matter Park in Marion, Indiana. This was the event’s seventh year, with the first event being held in 2008. In 2008 it was an effort to raise money for the family of SFC Collin J. Bowen. At that time, his family was traveling back and forth from Marion to a burn treatment unit in Texas where SFC Bowen was struggling for his life. While serving in Afghanistan, SFC Bowen was critically injured by a roadside IED. After 10 weeks of fighting for his life, SFC Bowen succumbed to his injuries and passed away on March 14, 2008. Despite SFC Bowen’s death, the event planners drove on and held the first “Collin Bowen Run” in May 2008.
Since then the event has grown and flourished honoring America’s military. By way of honoring America’s military, veterans and service members register for free. Proceeds from the run go to the SFC Collin J. Bowen Memorial Scholarship Fund, Inc., which awards scholarships to students from Marion. The fund also built and maintains the Indiana Freedom Memorial at Matter Park in Marion. Veterans Help Group invites everyone to join in honoring those who served and are serving our country. Five hundred and twenty seven runners and walkers participated in this year’s event.
