For Some Vets, Alternative PTSD Treatments are a Better Solution

i 3 Table Of Contents

VA and the Department of Defense have spent at least $65 million on PTSD research, and about 7 percent of that money has gone to treatment remedies. The VA has also developed 10 Mental Illness Research Education and Clinical Centers where doctors and researchers can work to develop new treatments.

While many veterans with PTSD are prescribed medications to curb PTSD symptoms, these medications often cause undesirable side effects. Additionally, some prescription pills can cause dependency problems. These issues may be alleviated by alternative PTSD treatments.

Some types of alternative remedies are well-known to veterans already. Group therapy sessions are one example. Other alternative remedies include yoga, acupuncture, and acupressure. We have previously discussed the use of art classes as a way to deal with PTSD on this blog. So, obviously, the possibilities for alternative treatment remedies are endless. The question is, of course, effectiveness. And that is why additional research is necessary.
