A governmental organization has published a new guide that is intended to help veterans suffering from traumatic brain injury (TBI) make the adjustment back to the classroom.
The Defense and Veterans Brain Injury Center, which is a part of the U.S. Military Health System, has worked to develop a guide called “Back to School: Guide to Academic Success After Traumatic Brain Injury.” It represents a collaboration of efforts not only by mental health specialists but also by TBI patients themselves. The guide focuses on solving challenges that many veterans with TBI face when they attempt to return to school, such as cognitive impairments that are a result of the injury.
Many people who suffer from TBI have symptoms such as memory loss, headaches, difficulty processing thoughts and making judgments, and difficulty being in crowded settings. All of these symptoms, obviously, could impact the ability to function in a school setting. Since 2000, more than 280,000 of our service men and women have been treated for TBI, and for many the challenges of attempting to return to civilian life after the injury are difficult.
