A new report from the Congressional Research Service shows nearly 400,000 cases of military PTSD and TBI since 2001. There were more than 130,000 new cases of post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and more than 253,000 new cases of traumatic brain injury (TBI), in the past 12 years. Approximately 50,540 troops have been wounded since 2001, although this figure does not include those suffering from head injuries or TBI.
The majority of those that have been diagnosed with TBI have either mild or moderate injuries, although even mild TBI results in disorientation for less than 24 hours or loss of consciousness for a half-hour. Even more startling is that the numbers reported here are almost certainly low. This is because many vets suffering from PTSD have not yet been formally diagnosed with the condition.
