2024 VA Disability Cost of Living Adjustment and Pay Rates
The latest cost of living adjustment (COLA) for VA disability benefits took effect on December 1, 2023. Benefits for 2024 will be 3.2% higher than 2023 benefits. Here’s what that means for those receiving veterans disability benefits.
How Is The Cost Of Living Adjustment Determined?
Each year, the Social Security Administration (SSA) announces a cost of living adjustment based on the increased cost of living compared with the previous year. The VA’s COLA is based on that calculation
With inflation high in 2022 and 2023, veterans have seen big bumps for the past couple of years. In 2023, benefits increased by 8.7%. Inflation is slowing, now, and so are those increases.
How Will the 2024 Adjustment Impact Veterans Disability Benefits?
New monthly veterans disability benefits for the veteran alone will be:
- 100% – $3,737.85 (up from $3,621.95 in 2023)
- 90% – $2,241.91 (up from $2,172.39 in 2023)
- 80% – $1,995.01 (up from $1,933.15 in 2023)
- 70% – $1,716.28 (up from $1,663.06 in 2023)
- 60% – $1,361.88 (up from $1,319.65 in 2023)
- 50% – $1,075.16 (up from $1,041.82 in 2023)
- 40% – $755.28 (up from $731.86 in 2023)
- 30% – $524.31 (up from $508.05 in 2023)
- 20% – $338.49 (up from $327.99 in 2023)
- 10% – $171.23 (up from $165.92 in 2023)
A veteran who has a disability rating of 30% or higher and has dependents is typically entitled to increased compensation. Those rates will also be bumped up by 3.2% for 2024. For example, a veteran with a spouse and one child will receive $4,098.87 in VA disability benefits, up from $3,971.78 in 2023.
Veterans don’t have to take any action to see larger payments. The increase takes effect in December and will be reflected in end-of-month payments.
