Do You Qualify for Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)? How Disabled Veterans Can Get Extra VA Pay Beyond 100%
Did you know about Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)? You may qualify for additional pay above and beyond your official combined disability rating, even if you already receive the 100% disability rate.
What Is Special Monthly Compensation (SMC)?
Special Monthly Compensation is an additional tax-free payment that VA pays above and beyond a Veteran’s official disability percentage if they meet certain requirements that relate to one or more of their service-connected disabilities. It’s VA’s way of recognizing that some disabilities create extra challenges that deserve extra compensation.
Common Special Monthly Compensation Categories
There are many SMC levels — labeled with letters like L, M, N, O, R, and so on — but here are some of the most common:
SMC (K)
Paid for the loss or loss of use of a specific organ or body part — like an eye, hand, foot, etc. This rate is also commonly awarded for loss of or loss of use of a reproductive organ, which may involve diagnoses such as erectile dysfunction and female sexual arousal disorder, which are often caused by your already service-connected conditions.
SMC (L)
For Veterans who need Aid and Attendance — meaning regular help with bathing, dressing, feeding, or protecting themselves from everyday hazards.
SMC (S)
Known as Housebound and awarded to those who are substantially confined to their home due to service-connected disabilities or for those who have a single disability rated total with additional disabilities that would combine to 60% or higher.
Additional SMC Qualifications
There are additional SMC categories for ailments such as blindness, deafness, amputations, and situations where a higher level of aid and attendance care is warranted, including situations that involve traumatic brain injury.

FAQs: Special Monthly Compensation (SMC):
Can I receive Special Monthly Compensation (SMC) if I already have a 100% VA disability rating?
Yes. Special Monthly Compensation is paid in addition to a Veteran’s regular VA disability compensation, including for those who already receive a 100% disability rating. Many Veterans qualify for SMC due to loss of use, the need for Aid and Attendance, housebound status, or other qualifying service-connected conditions, even if VA has not automatically awarded it.
What medical conditions or situations commonly qualify a Veteran for SMC?
Veterans may qualify for Special Monthly Compensation due to conditions such as the loss or loss of use of a limb or organ, the need for Aid and Attendance, housebound status, blindness, deafness, amputations, or severe conditions like traumatic brain injury that require a higher level of care. Some SMC awards are also related to secondary conditions caused by already service-connected disabilities.
Does VA automatically award Special Monthly Compensation, or do I need to apply?
VA does not always automatically award Special Monthly Compensation, even when a Veteran meets the criteria. In many cases, SMC is overlooked unless it is specifically identified and raised during a claim or appeal. Working with an experienced VA disability advocate can help ensure potential SMC entitlement is recognized and properly pursued.
