On Wednesday, President Trump fired Veterans Affairs Secretary David Shulkin who was embroiled in scandal over charging taxpayers for luxury travel. Trump has nominated Ronny L. Jackson to replace the former secretary. Jackson is an active-duty rear admiral in the Navy who has served as White House physician for the last three administrations.
Jackson appears to be credentialed and experienced in the medical field but has no background in management. The VA has an annual budget of $186 billion dollars and employs over 360,000 individuals. Currently, the department suffers from a shortage of doctors, nurses and mental-health experts.
Some worry the nomination of Jackson as head of the VA could be disastrous for veterans. Before assuming the role, Jackson must be go through Senate confirmation.
We will continue to report on these proceedings.
