VA May Extend Service Presumption for Gulf War Illnesses

Congress and the VA are fighting whether post 9/11 combat veterans should receive the same presumption that unexplained medical conditions could be the result of military service that has applied to the veterans of the 1991 Gulf War. The VA is willing to have the service presumption for Gulf War illnesses apply to Operation Iraqi Freedom veterans, but the VA opposes extending the presumption to troops in Afghanistan because there is no indication of similar health problems in those veterans. Rep. Larry Kissel who is in favor of the extension stated, “Illnesses do not recognize government statutes or regulatory timetables…” We can only hope the VA does what is best for our nation’s newest veterans.
