A Weekend Full of Inspiration and Heroism In Atlanta

Something truly inspirational happened in Atlanta last week. An Evening of Honor wasn’t your typical event, it was an up-close, honest, and powerful night that reminded everyone what real leadership and sacrifice look like. Hosted by the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership and made possible thanks to the support of Truist and Veterans Help Group, the evening brought together people from all walks of life for an unforgettable experience.

This wasn’t just another recognition dinner. It was a real conversation, raw, inspiring, and deeply human, led by two Medal of Honor recipients Edward C. Byers, Jr., US Navy (Ret.), and Leroy A. Petry, US Army (Ret.) who shared their stories, their challenges, and what it truly means to lead when it matters most.

What Made This Night So Powerful

Both Edward C. Byers, Jr., US Navy (Ret.), and Leroy A. Petry, US Army (Ret.) are recognized for their extraordinary acts of bravery during the War on Terrorism in Afghanistan. Their stories go far beyond headlines or history books, these are real moments of courage in the face of impossible odds, where quick decisions meant the difference between life and death, and selflessness defined every action.

With only 61 living recipients of this prestigious award, hearing directly from two of them in such an intimate setting was a rare and powerful experience. It wasn’t just about what they did, it was about who they are. Their humility, strength, and sense of duty resonated deeply with everyone in the room. You could feel the shift in the atmosphere as they spoke, people leaned in, fully present, hanging onto every word. It was the kind of night that leaves a mark and makes you think differently about service, leadership, and what it truly means to put others before yourself. Their words sparked meaningful conversations throughout the evening and even well into the night as guests mingled, reflected, and connected over shared values.

“The battlefield teaches you about yourself, about fear, about responsibility, about what it means to lead when lives are on the line.”

Honoring Our Heroes On Military Appreciation Day

Following this inspirational dinner, our team had the privilege of attending Military Appreciation Night at Truist Park, home of the Atlanta Braves. The evening served as a powerful and unifying tribute to the men and women who have served and continue to serve our country.

A highlight of the night was the emotional moment when Medal of Honor Recipients Edward C. Byers, Jr., US Navy (Ret.), and Leroy A. Petry, US Army (Ret.) stepped onto the field. Their presence, alongside the recognition from the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership, added depth and meaning to the celebration, reminding everyone of the values these heroes embody.

From the stirring pregame ceremonies to the outpouring of support from fans and organizers, the night was a meaningful celebration of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. We are honored to have taken part in such an inspiring event.

Veterans Help Group’s Shared Mission

At Veterans Help Group, we understand that leadership rooted in integrity and service has the power to transform lives. That’s why we were honored to support and attend events like these.

An Evening of Honor is part of the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership’s larger mission: to equip leaders of all ages with the tools to lead with character. Through fellowships, on-site training, and a growing digital platform, they’re helping to instill the values of our nation’s heroes into the next generation.

We left this Memorial Day weekend truly inspired. It was a reminder that honoring our veterans doesn’t stop at applause. It’s about continuing their legacy through action, empathy, and leadership in our own communities.
