The VA has taken away close to half a billion dollars from nearly 25,000 veterans from 2010 to 2015. Using this little known federal law allows the VA to recoup military severance pay from years prior if the veteran later received VA disability compensation. The law was part of a general law intended to prevent “double dipping” for government benefits. However, this is not a case of double dipping. The severance pay is military pay and the other is compensation for disabilities. VA’s own Office of General Counsel could not provide any clear explanation for the law. Full Story
