2025 COLA for Disabled Veterans
VA disability benefits are getting a boost for 2025. After higher-than-average increases in the past few years, including a jump of 8.7% in 2023, levels are settling back to normal. In 2025, VA disability recipients will see their monthly benefits increase by 2.5%.
The fluctuation in increases from year to year is because the increase is a cost of living adjustment (COLA) intended to keep pace with inflation. Since the inflation rate has dropped dramatically, the necessary adjustment has also decreased.
How is the COLA Determined?
Disabled veterans receive the same cost of living adjustment as Social Security recipients. The Social Security Administration (SSA) determines the adjustment based on the Consumer Price Index for Urban Wage Earners and Clerical Workers (CPI-W). The CPI-W is published monthly by the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), and compares the cost of a wide range of consumer expenses such as food, shelter, clothing, and medical care with those same costs one year prior.
When the Q3 CPI-W is higher than it was in Q3 of the prior year, signaling that the cost of living has increased, benefits are adjusted based on that increase.
