Veterans Help Group in the Community
Written by: Bobbi Boudi, Director of Community Outreach, Amy McArdle, Senior Advocate, and Caroline Temple, Senior Advocate

At Veterans Help Group, our mission is rooted in honoring and supporting those who have served our nation. This goes beyond supporting veterans with their disability compensation – we recognize that strengthening our communities is an essential part of that commitment as well. As a part of that outreach we are proud to be a longtime partner of Habitat for Humanity, supporting their mission through donations, volunteerism, and community engagement.
We regularly contribute to our local Habitat for Humanity program and participate in team build days — hands-on opportunities to give back while learning valuable construction skills. This summer, members of the Veterans Help Group team took part in a Habitat for Humanity home build, which we proudly sponsored for a veteran homeowner. When we arrived on site and had the chance to meet the homeowner, we were deeply moved to learn that the veteran was also one of our own clients. While we are always honored to give back to the veteran community, this experience was especially rewarding, as Jen Puryear, the veteran’s advocate, and Travis Hulsizer, the veteran’s case manager, were both present and actively volunteering, making the day even more impactful for all. It was a powerful full-circle moment that brought deeper meaning to the work we do — both on and off the job.
This year, Habitat for Humanity of Tampa Bay Gulfside celebrates its 40th anniversary, along with the remarkable milestone of completing its 1,000th home. Habitat offers homeownership opportunities with 0% interest mortgages and requires homeowners to take an active role in the building process. Depending on the affiliate, new homeowners contribute between 250–500 volunteer hours, working alongside staff and volunteers. Additionally, they complete 38 educational classes to prepare for homeownership — ensuring long-term success and stability.
Because homelessness is so prevalent among the Veteran population, the mission of Habitat for Humanity is one that is very important to us. We are honored to support an organization that is changing lives and building stronger communities, one home at a time.
