Veterans Help Group Leadership Team Completes Elite Training to Better Serve Veterans

At Veterans Help Group, the mission has always been clear: deliver the highest level of advocacy and support to veterans and individuals navigating complex disability claims. Recently, that mission took center stage as the organization’s leadership team completed an intensive two-day training focused on one goal: better leadership for better client outcomes.

Bringing together leaders from Veterans Help Group, Disability Help Group, and Advocacy Solutions, the experience reinforced a powerful truth: when leadership improves, so does the support clients receive.

Strengthening Leadership to Improve Client Outcomes

Navigating the veterans disability claims process or applying for Social Security Disability benefits can be overwhelming. That’s why strong leadership behind the scenes matters.

This two-day training focused on improving how leaders communicate, support their teams, and stay aligned around what matters most: the people we’re helping. It wasn’t just about internal growth, it was about making sure every disabled individual gets a better, more supportive experience from start to finish.

When leadership is clear, connected, and focused, it naturally leads to stronger teams, and better support for the veterans and individuals relying on that guidance every day.

Building High-Performance Leadership

The first day of training was led by Dr. Ben Sorensen, President and CEO of Sorensen Consulting, Inc., and a U.S. Navy Reserve Chaplain.

With more than 20 years of experience coaching senior executives, Dr. Sorensen delivered a highly interactive and customized session focused on:

  • Leadership communication strategies
  • Building high-performing teams
  • Creating alignment across departments

Our leaders walked away with actionable tools they can immediately apply, especially when supporting teams that help clients through disability applications and appeals.

“The customized training provided actionable communication strategies that can easily be applied in how we lead and engage our teams.” – Natale Burns Disability Help Group Managing Advocate

Values-Based Leadership Inspired by Heroes

The second day elevated the experience even further with Values-Based Leadership Training led by the National Medal of Honor Center for Leadership.

Dr. Justin Habash led this session, which was centered around the core values that define Medal of Honor recipients: integrity, courage, commitment, and sacrifice, and what it really looks like to lead with those principles in everyday decisions.

Rather than just talking about these values, the training brought them to life through hands-on, real-world scenarios. Our team was pushed to think through tough situations, make decisions under pressure, and reflect on how those choices impact the people they serve.

A Rare Opportunity to Learn from a Medal of Honor Recipient

One of the most impactful moments of the training was hearing directly from Gary L. Littrell, retired U.S. Army Command Sergeant Major, alongside Suzanne Rampe Littrell.

With fewer than 70 living Medal of Honor recipients in the United States, this was a rare opportunity to gain firsthand insight into leadership under pressure and the true meaning of service.

“Spending the day learning from Command Sergeant Major Gary Littrell was a humbling experience and a reminder of the tremendous debt we owe all those who served.” – Matt Sauerwald, President & CEO

“Hearing Gary speak about leading under fire and making life-and-death decisions while putting his team above himself challenged us to lead with greater accountability, humility, and an unwavering commitment to the veterans we serve.” – Donnel Beckles Managing Director, Veterans Help Group

Why This Training Matters For Veterans Help Group

This wasn’t just a leadership event, it was about making a real difference for the clients we serve.
