Exchanges are like discounted department stores for military communities. The Pentagon is in process of allowing honorably discharged veterans access to online military exchanges. Currently about 10% of the nation’s veterans have access to these sites. Groups that current have access include, active-duty service members, reservists, National Guard, retirees, veterans who are at 100% disabled and immediate family members. Opening up this option for veterans not only assists veterans who did not serve in the military long enough to retire but it also positively affects the lives of military men and women who are currently serving. The increase in revenue can be allocated back into the system. Welfare and recreational programs are funded by profits from the exchange. Renovations and construction projects may be enhanced as well. They hope to establish access to veterans starting Veterans Day 2017.
