2025 Social Security Updates: New Identity Proofing Requirements

Big Changes Coming to Social Security

The Social Security Administration (SSA) is stepping up security to protect your benefits from fraud. Starting April 14, 2025, new identity proofing requirements will be in place for some services. But don’t worry, if you’re applying for Disability Insurance (SSDI), Medicare, or Supplemental Security Income (SSI), these new in-person requirements won’t apply to you.

What’s Changing?

The SSA wants to make sure that only the right people have access to benefits. As part of this effort, they’re rolling out stronger identity verification methods. However, they’ve made some important exceptions:

  • If you’re applying for SSDI, Medicare, or SSI, you can complete your claim entirely over the phone, no office visit is required.
  • If you’re applying for Retirement, Survivors, or Auxiliary benefits (such as spouse or child benefits) and can’t use a personal my Social Security account, you’ll need to verify your identity in person.
  • There will be exceptions for extreme cases, like terminal illness or prisoner pre-release situations.

In addition to these changes, If you’re not using the online my Social Security services and need to update your direct deposit information, you’ll need to visit a Social Security office or call 1-800-772-1213 to schedule an appointment.
