What’s Ahead for VA Disability Benefits with the New Office of Management and Budget Director?

During his confirmation hearing on January 21st 2025, VA Secretary Doug Collins promised to protect veterans’ benefits, emphasizing that he wouldn’t “balance the budgets on the backs of veterans.” However, the confirmation of Russell Vought as the new Office of Management and Budget Director has raised concerns.

Vought was involved in two conservative proposals that suggest major changes to VA disability benefits. This has put veterans’ service organizations on alert, wary of any potential shifts in VA compensation.

Matt Sauerwald, president of Veterans Help Group, shares his thoughts on the matter.

“In recent years, our government has demonstrated a strong bi-partisan commitment to Social Security benefits and to Veterans’ benefits.  In fact, the only thing that both parties seem to agree upon are these two programs.  Whether it was the 2022 PACT Act which was the largest expansion of veterans’ benefits in our nation’s history, or the recently passed Social Security Fairness Act that expanded Social Security benefits to millions of public sector employees, our political leaders have time and time again shown their priorities are to expand these programs not to cut them.  The last two Consolidated Appropriations Acts of 2022 and 2023 have also made available additional funding and resources to these programs.

At Disability Help Group and Veterans Help Group, we are committed to helping the Social Security Administration and the Department of Veterans’ Affairs modernize their platforms and root out inefficiencies to provide faster and better reasoned decisions for our clients.  We believe that the new leaders at both VA and SSA will continue to support expanding and modernizing these entitlements instead of looking for ways to undermine these vital and tremendously popular programs.”
